Michelle Chrisman grew up in Colorado and was drawn to art and encouraged by her father, who was a sculptor. In New York City, she graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a BFA and earned a degree in illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Working as an art director for advertising at Macy's, Chrisman studied drawing and painting at the New York Art Students League. She began painting landscapes in earnest after moving to New Mexico and taking workshops in Taos with Ray Vinella and Kevin MacPherson.

A move to Denver provided Chrisman with further training, and she became a member of the "Denver 10" painters. In 2003, she suggested the group assist the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance by painting endangered wild lands. Two successful shows called Wildlands Painted! raised both awareness and funds for protection of these areas, a satisfying experience
