James M. Needham was born on October 22, 1954. He grew up on farms and ranches in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. He graduated from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA in 1976 and did post-graduate painting study at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Living and painting in Colorado Springs, Colorado from 1977 to the present, Jim and hi wife, Charlene keep a quiet home and studio at the base of Pikes Peak.

Jim's landscapes reflect his lifelong reverence for the beauty of nature. His work is grounded upon solid basic skills, but he tries never to inflict the viewer with overt technical demonstrations. He abhors stylizations and prefers scrupulous honesty in his work. That his paintings are scientifically accurate is of no concern to Jim. As he says with a wink: "Science is easy, art is hard".
